Chimney Repair
Most chimneys are constructed with brick and mortar (the joints holding the bricks together). Bricks can last in upwards of 100 years but the mortar usually lasts about 25 years. Over time and due to exposure to the wind, rain, cold mornings & warm days and freezing/thawing the bricks and mortar eventually break down and start showing signs of wear. Tuckpointing becomes necessary when the mortar joints have cracked, flaked, or disintegrated due to the abrasive effects of the elements.
Some signs that tuckpointing is needed:
- Loose bricks
- Loss of most of the mortar
- Large pieces of loose mortar
- Split bricks
If this is not tended to, a chimney can deteriorate to the point that it may collapse.
Tuckpointing is time-consuming work and requires an eye for detail. It requires the removal of the old mortar to a uniform depth and replacing it with new mortar that is color-matched to the existing mortar.
Once complete this will prevent further deterioration of the chimney.
